We all want a good night’s sleep, but millions of consumers suffer from sleep difficulties.

It may be that your pillow is too old and tired to be comfortable any more. You may be sleeping with the wrong type of pillow for your sleeping style. Dirty pillows can also release unpleasant odours, along with allergy-causing microscopic bedfellows. No matter the cause, when you’re uncomfortable in bed, you don’t get the full night’s rest you deserve.

Does your pillow match your sleeping style?
Firm pillows offer the best support for side sleepers. If you sleep on your back a medium pillow is fine. Stomach sleepers need a softer pillow to avoid neck strain.

Do you have enough pillows?
The average consumer sleeps with two pillows and some women typically sleep with more pillows than men.

Do you know who else you’re sleeping with?
Dustmites, mold, mildew, bacteria, saliva and yeast are all unwanted bed fellows that occur and increase naturally inside your pillows. The accumulation of these unwanted guests can worsen existing allergies and contribute to a restless sleep.

Are your guests comfortable too?
Rather than putting old, unsanitary pillows in the guest room, why not recycle them to your sham stuffers, cover them and make a pet’s bed, or kneel on them while gardening.

Myth: Pillows can be kept for an extended period of time.
Truth: Half of consumers surveyed wait four years to replace their pillows, which should be replaced every one to three years. Old and soiled pillows can be a breeding ground for mold, mildew and dust mites. Purchase pillows with hypo-allergenic fiberfill with antimicrobial protection that can be machine washed and dried for the best performance.

Myth: Comfortable pillows are always in good condition.
Truth: Pillow problems are not always easily recognized. It is important to inspect your pillows four times a year- on the first day of each season. Wash stained or discolored pillows, and replace pillows that are flat, lumpy or torn.

Myth: Pillowcases protect my pillow.
Truth: A pillowcase cannot do the job alone. Almost half of consumers surveyed never wash their pillow. Since drool, sweat, mold, mildew and bacteria can permeate pillowcases, it is imperative to wash pillows in hot water (130o F) every three to six months.
